Six days before I was leaving for a two-week trip to Europe, the pet sitter I’d booked months in advance canceled. Six. Days. Before. I had a dog and a cat I adore, a suitcase half packed, and suddenly I was scrambling to figure out who I could trust with my home and my animals while I was on another continent.

I remember thinking, how is this still happening?

And honestly? That wasn’t even the worst part. It wasn’t the first time.

I’d hired cleaners through every app you can think of. One would cancel the morning of. Another would show up late, rush through the job, and somehow skip entire rooms. Customer support? Good luck. I’d send photos, file complaints, and get a refund, but never a solution. The apps were built to find me another stranger, not fix the problem.

When it came to my vacation rentals, it was the same story. Every turnover felt like a gamble. Did they actually clean behind the bathroom door? Did they restock the essentials? Did they notice the broken lamp before my next guest did? One careless turnover can cost you a five-star review, and eventually, your reputation.

At some point, I realized I wasn’t frustrated with the people. I was frustrated with the system.

Somewhere along the way, we accepted that this is just how home services work. Cross your fingers. Hope they show up. Hope they care. Hope they don’t disappear the week before your vacation.

I don’t accept that.
